Physical Oceanography
In contrast to the unifying role that theory plays in the exact sciences, theory in climatology is a gloss that keeps the task interesting.", said the physical oceanography giant, Hank Stommel ("Volcano Weather", 1983, Seven Sea Press). There is a huge gap between the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics that (is supposed to) describe the ocean and in situ data. The signal predicted by GFD is always covered by something not mentioned in GFD ("noise"). The way we study ocean is not that a theory leading to observation to prove/disprove the theory but that whatever data you have leading to quest for a theory that best describes the data. My interest has been in the interaction between marginal seas and oceans, and in the Southern Ocean where the circular shape provides interesting physics. I am also interested in the global Meridional Overturning Circulation. Recently, I am also fascinated by the key players in the MOC -- vertcal and horizontal mixing. My methods include numerical simulation.
